Florida born and North Carolina raised, Davy Williamson’s debut single “Thin Disguise” is the work of a musical sensibility thoroughly immersed in hard rock. His background may lead listeners to assume Williamson mines southern rock traditions for songwriting use, but his brand of hard rock has far broader appeal than owing obvious debts to blues. Williamson’s songwriting further sets itself apart for its willingness to wrestle with themes of dysfunction. Another distinguishing characteristic of Williamson’s work is its longing for a sense of community. He writes for those who have experienced similar losses and changes; it gives his music an understated redemptive quality. “Thin Disguise” is a unique combination of fiery muscle and substantive personal statement boding well for Davy Williamson’s musical feature.
On Thin Disguise, he follows up with some more vocal genius, which is obviously his strongest suit to be found if you’re hearing him for the first time anyway. He delivers another standard with this track, almost like changing it up without a lot of notice. As the guitars do come a lot more to life on this. And to digress on the former opinion, his voice carries this beyond any concern. But that doesn’t mean an entire song would appeal any less. And this track also improves on the abrupt ending by providing an excellent fade away ending. And it leaves the rest as the gravy that it is.
This song kicks off with the guitars sending us on a journey of realisation of how much talent we have got here… The way that the song ensures that not a moment is wasted as every single part is magnified…
“Thin Disguise” goes to show that Davy Williamson’s contribution to music is much needed and his legacy is certainly one of greatness.
