Dom Champ is an independent poet and hip hop artist from Brighton. He’s got a sound which is inspired by the classic rap artists like Eminem, and the storytelling honest sound of The Streets. We decided to catch up with the Champ for an exclusive interview as he drops new single ‘Slow’.
What inspired you to get into music?
I’ve always been into my music as a listener, it’s truly my favourite thing. I’d sooner listen to an album that watch a TV show or film. I wasn’t exactly encouraged into music by my family or friends growing up, if anything my parents actively discouraged it. Then one day someone told me to book a studio. I had all the writing, loads of freestyle practice and bags of passion and this was the next step – I never knew that booking a studio with an engineer would have changed so many possibilities. I owe it all to that person who is now my wife.
How would you describe your music?
My music is a combination of Spoken word and Rap and I like to think it’s entirely unique. I have a non-descript ‘South of England’ accent and I refuse to ‘put on’ any kind persona, the lyrics, the voice, the feelings and the messages are all 100% me. I like to put meaningful messages in my music and I always include an element of duality, of looking at both sides of anything and that is because that’s just how my mind works.
Where would you like to see your music career in 5 years time?
I hope that in 5 years time I hope I am established enough to give up the sales job that supports this passion. I want to spread my message and I want people to repeat words that I’ve written or performed that enlighten people or that spread positivity. My dream would be that the studio is my place of work – I will follow that path that allows that.
Where can music fans listen your music?
My music is available on all streaming platforms, I have also just released my first music video on spotfy.
